Telefonia móvel e questões de gênero: Aspectos socioculturais da apropriação de telefones celulares entre mulheres em situação de vulnerabilidade social

Esta investigação consiste em uma etnografia dos impactos da apropriação de telefones celulares entre mulheres em situação de pobreza ou extrema pobreza, residentes na cidade de Curitiba, no sul do Brasil. Apoiando-se em autores que analisam tanto a centralidade das tecnologias móveis na modernidade, bem como seu papel para o desenvolvimento, são exploradas as diversas práticas, expectativas e representações dessas mulheres no que tange às tecnologias de comunicação e informação. A análise dos dados de campo revela quatro temáticas predominantes: (a) a preocupação com o custo das tarifas de telefonia móvel; (b) a relevância do telefone celular para o cuidado com os filhos, a manutenção dos laços familiares e o bem-estar geral da família como um todo; (c) o papel dos telefones celulares na geração de renda, no mundo do trabalho e no auxílio em momentos de doença; (d) a conscientização da importância do acesso à Internet para a educação e a empregabilidade, especialmente dos filhos. A partir das percepções dessas mulheres a respeito do papel da telefonia móvel em suas vidas, discutem-se ao final deste trabalho iniciativas governamentais e empresariais no uso do telefone celular em projetos de inclusão social no Brasil, assim como a possibilidade de sua replicação na comunidade pesquisada.

Mobile telephony and gender issues: sociocultural aspects of the appropriation of cell phones among women in a situation of social vulnerability
This investigation consists of an ethnography on the impacts of the appropriation of cell phones among women experiencing poverty or extreme poverty who live in the city of Curitiba, in South Brazil. Drawing from authors that analyze the centrality of mobile technologies in modernity, as well as their role for development, the paper explores the diverse practices, expectations and representations of such women as far as communication and information technologies are concerned. The analysis of fieldwork data reveals four predominant themes: (a) a concern with the high costs of cell phone tariffs in Brazil; (b) the importance of cell phones in the care of children, the maintenance of family ties and the overall well-being of the family as a whole; (c) the role of cell phones in the generation of income, in the world of work and in sickness; (d) the growing awareness on the part of women of the importance of Internet access for education and for getting better jobs, especially for their children.
