lirne

Preliminary results of DIRSI's research on mobile tariffs in Latin America were presented by Dr. Hernan Galperin at the LIRNEasia@5 conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 9 to 11 December 2009.

The results indicate that while there has been progress in the right direction, mobile tariffs in Latin America remain higher than those of developed countries and much higher than those of emerging markets in Asia.

Hernan Galperin LIRNEasia@5The analysis shows that there is still a long way to go before the region reaches affordability levels that will enable a wider use of mobile telephony.

The results were presented in a panel moderated by Tim Kelly, an ICT specialist with the World Bank's infoDev programme. Other panelists were freom LIRNEasia and Research ICT Africa (RIA!).

A draft report of the data will be published soon.
