Mobile Opportunities: Collecting Primary Information
After studying the background, the second phase of the Mobile Opportunities project involved the gathering of primary data from the countries included in the study. A household survey was conducted in countries of the region with different market conditions. This research was complemented with qualitative studies carried out in Peru and Jamaica.
More than 7,000 in-home interviews were conducted with individuals between the ages of 13 and 70 living in low-income households in the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.
In each case a probabilistic sample was drawn using maps from geo-referenced databases provided by the national statistics office of each country. In each household one individual was randomly selected to be interviewed.
The aim was to obtain a representative (and statistically independent) sample of low-income residents in urban areas of each country, although in one case (Jamaica), semi-rural areas were also included. The fieldwork was carried out between April and June 2007.
The researchers representing each country presented a report with the findings from their respective databases. This was followed by the preparation of comparative regional report presenting the main findings from the seven countries covered by the project.
