m-banking in Latin America
The number of mobile telephone users now exceeds the number of people with bank accounts in many developing countries, and this facilitates the use of the mobile network to provide banking services in poor and rural zones, according to Judith Mariscal in her paper "Móviles para el desarrollo" presented at the meetng of the annual conference of the Latin American Studies Association - LASA in June 2009.
The study claims that mobile banking is an opportunity for telecommunication companies and financial institutions to increase their markets and revenue. It is also an opportunity to provide access to banking services to the sectors at the bottom of the pyramid.
