5.08.10
The Temporal Mutisectoral Commision in charge of setting up the National Plan for Broadband Development in Peru continues its work and on Thursday 19 July 2010 organised its second workshop.
The main topics discussed in this meeting were: the duty of setting up optical fiber in the case of electric transmission and hidrocarbon transport projects, and the installation of ducts and chambers in projected roads; piracy; taxes for spectrum; the importance of satellites for the provision of Internet services; FITEL projects; the levels of literacy and kowledge of the population about the benefits of broadband; the exemption of VAT for equipment; the role of affordability for increasing demand. When discussing this last subject, it was cited DIRSI's study Tariffs and affordability gap of mobile telephony services in Latin America and the Caribbean.
As in the first workshop, participants represented the main stakeholders of broadband development in Peru: government authorities, operators, academics, consultants, and telecom equipment providers. DIRSI resarchers Roxana Barrantes and Aileen Agüero were among them.
